Immediate Past District Governor - Julie Carney
District Governor 2023-2024
Julie Carney
Julie and her husband Jim have been married for 33 years and have lived in Avon for the past 23 years. They have four children and four (almost five) grandsons. Their son Joshua and his wife Sawyer and three boys live in Medina, daughter Hannah and husband Eddie and son live in Geneseo, son Jacob lives and works in Rochester, and daughter Sarah is getting her Masters at SUNY Brockport and lives in Henrietta. Along with Julie being a proud Rotarian, Jim is a proud 20+ year member of the Avon Lions Club. Through the Lions, their family got involved with the Guiding Eyes for the Blind and have raised 3 dogs.
Julie joined Avon Rotary in 2009. She immediately became involved with the High School Interact Club and from 2010-2012 she was the District Interact Chair. From 2011-2013 she became involved with the Youth Exchange Program as a Club Counselor/Youth Exchange Officer as well as a Country Officer for Argentina, Bolivia, Ecuador and Belgium. Her family started hosting exchange students in 2010. Julie joined the District YEX Committee and was the Outbound Chair 2012-2015, Inbound Chair 2015-2018 and the District Chair 2018-2020. Julie and her family have hosted 6 students over the years. Their daughter Sarah was an exchange student to Belgium in 2017-18 and remains active with the District Rotex.
Along with Youth Exchange, Julie and Jim have been involved in RYLA (Rotary Youth Leadership Awards). They started chaperoning in 2011 after seeing the impact of the program on their son, and worked in this position until 2017 when Julie took over as District Chair. Julie also has been instrumental in the past few years getting the New Generations Service Exchange (NGSE) program up and running in our district.
Julie has appreciated the recognition from her Avon Rotary Club - being named Rookie of the Year in 2011, Rotarian of the Year in 2012 and receiving a Paul Harris from the club in 2013. She served as President 2020-2021 and is a Paul Harris +4. Julie says the mentorship and training from our District, as well as from Rotary International, has been life changing and has given her the chance to work alongside some amazing Rotarians and she is looking forward to this year as your District Governor!
