The month of June has arrived and it just seemed like yesterday that at 12:01 AM on July 1st of last year, I received a call from Julie Carney and she said, “tag, your it.” From that all the training I had received the previous 2 and a half years was now to be put to use. I was a bit scared for suddenly I found myself at the top of the District. Though knowing the support that people have provided me on my journey to being DG eased some of the nervousness.

The Rotary International theme for June is Rotary Fellowships. Most of you are saying we have fellowship in our clubs during our meetings, projects and fundraisers. Though the type of Fellowships Rotary is recognizing this month goes beyond the club level.

Rotary Fellowships are international groups that share a common passion. Being part of a fellowship is a fun way to make friends around the world, explore a hobby or profession, and enhance your Rotary experience.

What are Rotary Fellowships? They are groups of any interested individuals who connect to explore shared interests in:

  • Recreational Activities
  • Hobbies
  • Sports
  • Vocations
  • Rotary History & Culture

There are over 100 fellowships worldwide. One I belong to is BREW (Beers Rotarians Enjoy Worldwide). Here is the website to learn more about fellowships:

www.rotary.org/fellowships

Here is how you can promote Fellowships:

  • Publicize events and activities organized by Fellowships on your club or district website
  • Invite local Fellowship officers to speak at a club meeting, virtual meeting, or district conference about their activities and related service work
  • Seek out Rotarians who are outstanding in their professions or are enthusiastic about a hobby and encourage them to join fellowships or develop new ones.

Do you have a passion where there is no Rotary Fellowship? Organize a new Fellowship.

Interested in starting a new international Fellowship on a new topic? Go to www.rotary.org/fellowships where you can find all the steps on how to get started.

You will need:

  • At least 25 potential members, representing at least five countries
  • Completed application form with a clear explanation of the group’s purpose
  • Copy of the group’s proposed bylaws
  • List of proposed officers and their responsibilities

This is my last DG Corner article. It has been a great run and a special thanks go out to my wife Ann, who kept me on task this Rotary year.  Love you!!
