Wow, we are already into September. The kids are back to school, the weather here in New York is unpredictable as always. The air starts cool, then we get a heat wave, I hate to even guess what the end of the month will be like. Speaking of the kids getting back to school, September is Rotary’s Basic Education and Literacy Month, a perfect time for our clubs to be reaching out to the schools and partnering with them on programs that support their needs and align with our efforts. Literacy, of course, is not just a goal for children, but for adults too in our community lacking that vital skill. Does your club have a program geared towards helping adults reach their ability to read? Be sure to share it with all of us in the district in next month's Grapevine. The gift of reading opens countless doors and opportunities that will change that person’s life and the lives of those around them or that depend on them. Teaching one to read creates hope in their lives.
Since July 10th, I have had the pleasure of visiting 53 of our 69 clubs in the district, sharing International President Gordon’s message of Create hope in the World while also sharing why his message resonates with me and why I feel it’s so important. If I have not been to your club yet, check your schedule, because I will be there soon and would love to see you. Speaking of Gordon, one of his major initiatives this year is to break the stigma around mental health. This month is also National Suicide Prevention Month, so rememberthat people struggle, people need help but are afraid to ask for help. Remember that if you are going to ask “How are you?” what you need to ask is “How are you, Really?”
I have to say that I have been having so much fun so far as your District Governor, seeing old friends and meeting new, helping to induct new members, presenting Paul Harris awards and learning about your clubs. I look forward to the upcoming months and the opportunities to work with your clubs on your projects, assist with your fundraisers and support you in your goals. Please be sure to keep me updated as to your club's schedule so that I can attend as many as possible. Friday September 8th, we had a great time at the District Golf Tournament. I want to personally thank everyone involved from the workers, the players, to the supporters. Tom and Laurie Vonglis and Kirk Vanderbilt did an awesome job organizing the event and all the proceeds will be going to Miss Julie’s School of Beauty run by the amazing Julie Chappus. If you have not yet had Julie out to your club yet, reach out to her, it will be a great program for your club and you will be amazed with her vision and goal.
